Why You’re Not Getting Interviews (Even With a Strong CV)
Does a quick look at your search history show phrases like “why am I not getting interviews”? You’re not alone. In a seemingly applicant-saturated job market, it can feel as though you’re casting the net wide but coming back empty in your hunt for a new career.
Many reasons, including large applicant pools, misaligned resumes, or vague job descriptions, could be to blame for your resume not getting interviews. But whatever the cause, a few simple tweaks can help you stand out.
In this article,
Emanate’s Senior Consultant Luca Francis shares practical advice on why you’re not getting interviews after applying for jobs. Learn the simple changes to your resume that could make all the difference in landing your dream career.
What’s tech hiring like right now?
Before you point the finger at yourself, let’s get an idea of the current job market. Australia-wide, we’re hiring for more jobs than ever. In fact, the latest
Jobs and Skills report shows an additional 24,300 new vacancies over the past year—a 2% increase. So, even though it feels as though there aren’t any suitable jobs anymore, it’s not as bleak as it seems.
Working in tech, you’re also in the fortunate position of having in-demand skills. According to
Australian employment projections, IT professionals are one of the top five occupations set for the greatest growth over the next decade. So, if you have a good resume but no interviews, it only takes a few edits to turn your luck around.
Why am I not getting interviews: a tech recruiter explains
Why am I not getting interviews, you ask? You’ve got the experience. Your resume looks polished. And you’ve worked in tech and IT for the past decade. According to Luca, not hearing back from hiring managers is becoming more common in tech. These days, there could be several reasons why.
You’re not presenting your experience in the right way
“Often, it’s not because the candidate lacks experience; it’s because their experience isn’t being presented in a way that matches what the client is looking for,” he says. “Hiring managers don’t have time to read between the lines, so if the connection isn’t obvious, great candidates can miss out.”
A few simple edits to your resume could be the change you need.
The market is inundated with good candidates
As mentioned earlier, the
current tech job market could also explain why you have an otherwise good resume but no interviews. “There are roles at the moment attracting dozens, sometimes hundreds of applications,” Luca says. “In those situations, clients can afford to be incredibly selective, so even a good candidate can miss out if someone’s background is just a little closer to the brief.”
It’s not you; it’s them
Why is my CV not getting interviews? Sometimes, it’s simply out of your control. There could be a change in the company’s hiring needs, an AI resume screener could unfairly disqualify you, or a large number of high-quality internal employees could be looking for a career move. Unfortunately, sometimes, you never know for sure why your CV didn’t get through.
How to stand out to employers
As tech recruitment experts, we know that rejection (or being ignored altogether) is extremely trying. And over time, it can lead to feelings of hopelessness. If you know you have the experience, but your resume just needs a little zhuzh, Emanate has tips to help.
Know the signals that hiring managers look for
“Employers want to know that you’ve done this before and can add value quickly,” Luca says. So, don’t use vague skills in your work experience. “Make sure to include clear examples of projects you’ve delivered, technologies you’ve worked with, and outcomes you’ve achieved along the way.”
Tailor your resume to each job
“Hiring Managers want to see why you're relevant for
their role, not every role,” Luca says. Edit your resume for each job you apply for, and make sure your key skills are easy to find and that they match the job’s requirements. “Candidates who rely on a ‘one size fits all’ CV never have as much success.”
Don’t leave room for questions
Any time an employer has to ask questions or wonder about your resume, it’s a waste of their time—and yours. According to Luca, there should be no ambiguity in your CV. “If your key achievements are buried or your career history raises unanswered questions, it's easy to be overlooked.”
Be selective about the roles you apply for
When you’re in the midst of a job search, it can sometimes feel discouraging. But avoid applying for every job you come across in the hopes that something will work out. “Stop and take a step back to reassess rather than sending out more applications,” Luca says. If the job doesn’t align with your skills or career goals, it’s probably not the right fit for you.
Follow up with recruiters
Don’t be afraid to reach out to recruiters or hiring managers to chat about your application. Sometimes, the feedback they give you could help you perfect your resume for the next role. At Emanate, we pride ourselves on staying in touch with our candidates every step of their job search, so we’ll always keep you in the loop.
In addition to your resume, other simple things can help you stand out. Keep your LinkedIn profile up to date, learn about the companies you’re applying for, and get in touch with a
recruiter who understands the tech industry. We can match your skills and goals to what our clients are looking for, without all the CV gatekeeping.
