About the Opportunity

We are seeking a hands-on UX/UI Designer for an immediate three-month contract with an established public sector digital team based in Melbourne's inner east.

Following an unexpected surge in customer-facing project priorities this quarter, the team needs an additional designer to join their agile digital practice. You will jump straight into active sprint delivery alongside a supportive UX Lead and product team, helping uplift existing digital customer experiences and keeping planned releases on track.

This is a delivery-focused sprint: high on practical Figma craft and design-system work, without getting bogged down by lengthy discovery cycles or heavy public-sector red tape.

Key Responsibilities
  • Hands-on Interface Design: Wireframe, prototype, and design clean, intuitive user journeys in Figma for outward-facing digital services.

  • Design System Enhancement: Work with and evolve an established design system, creating reusable components and updating pattern libraries aligned with WCAG accessibility standards.

  • Experience Uplift: Elevate current customer experiences through refreshed visual styling, interaction design, and interface concepts.

  • Developer Handover: Partner closely with front-end engineers to assess technical feasibility, provide clear design specifications, and support features through implementation.

  • Validation and Testing: Conduct light customer research, usability testing, and concept reviews to validate design decisions with evidence.

What We Are Looking For
  • Figma Execution: Daily fluency in Figma, including auto-layout, component architecture, variants, and interactive prototyping.

  • Design Systems Experience: Proven track record working with, maintaining, or expanding component libraries.

  • Clear Design Rationale: Ability to articulate the reasoning behind your design choices using customer feedback, metrics, or usability testing insights.

  • Collaborative Delivery: Experience working alongside developers and product colleagues in an agile setup, ensuring designs translate smoothly into code.

  • Relevant Portfolio (Essential): A current portfolio showcasing your end-to-end design craft, UI polish, and personal contribution across complex web or digital services.

  • Background: Agency or commercial digital product experience (such as higher education, telecommunications, insurance, or logistics) is highly valued; prior government experience is not required.

Why Apply?
  • Streamlined Interview Process: Decisive one-stage process consisting of a single 30-minute case study walk-through with the UX Lead, with no design tests.

  • Work-Life Balance: Clear hybrid working rhythm with 2 days on-site in Camberwell and 3 days remote.

  • Immediate Commercial Impact: Hit the ground running on a defined 12-week delivery backlog where your designs move into production quickly.

We are an inclusive employer committed to fostering a diverse and accessible workplace. We encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with disabilities, LGBTQIA+ individuals, people of all ages, and those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
