We are partnering with a large, complex organisation embarking on the next phase of a major digital platform initiative. Following lessons learned in the earlier stage, the focus now is on strong upfront technical planning, validation and pre-delivery assurance.
This contract Technical Lead role is suited to a senior full-stack engineer who thrives in ambiguity and enjoys shaping work before it hits delivery. You’ll play a critical role in bringing structure, clarity and confidence to technical plans, working closely with architects, developers and senior stakeholders.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role without direct reports, focused on influence, credibility and execution rather than people management.
What you will be doing
- Leading pre-delivery technical planning, discovery and prototyping to support the next phase of a large digital platform
- Translating high-level solution designs into delivery-ready technical scope
- Running technical spikes, proofs of concept and validation activities to reduce risk early
- Working closely with architects to assess what will (and won’t) work within the current platform
- Facilitating estimation and planning workshops with developers, producing defensible timelines and costings
- Pressure-testing assumptions, identifying gaps and escalating risks early
- Engaging regularly with senior technical and non-technical stakeholders to align on approach and expectations
- Providing pragmatic technical guidance to support delivery teams once plans are locked in
- Significant experience as a Senior Engineer, Technical Lead or Principal Engineer in complex environments
- Strong backend engineering background (Java), with solid frontend exposure (React)
- Experience working in AWS-based platforms
- Proven ability to operate upstream of delivery; shaping scope, estimates and plans rather than just executing tickets
- Confidence working alongside architects and influencing solution decisions
- Strong stakeholder communication skills, including the ability to justify estimates and challenge assumptions constructively
- A pragmatic, calm approach to ambiguity and problem-solving
- Experience in financial services, insurance or other highly regulated industries (highly regarded)
- Previous experience supporting digital platform rebuilds or major transformation programs
- Exposure to large, multi-team delivery environments
- Strong understanding of non-functional requirements such as scalability, resiliency and security
