A South Australian–based organisation operating within the defence and advanced technology sector, delivering secure, high-reliability solutions to government and industry. The organisation maintains a strong focus on security, compliance, and continuous improvement across its internal ICT environment.

Role Overview The System Administrator is responsible for the end-to-end management of the organisation’s internal ICT systems. This includes cloud and Microsoft platforms, server and virtualisation environments, networking infrastructure, security operations, and end-user computing.

This role plays a key part in ensuring system availability, security compliance, and operational efficiency within a regulated, security-conscious environment.

Key Responsibilities Cloud & Microsoft Platforms
  • Administer, maintain, and support Microsoft cloud services including:

    • Microsoft Teams

    • Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD)

    • SharePoint Online

    • Exchange Online / Outlook

    • Microsoft security and compliance services

  • Manage user accounts, access permissions, group membership, and security policies

  • Monitor system health, availability, and usage and respond to incidents as required

Email & Messaging Security
  • Administer and maintain Mimecast, including:

    • Email filtering and threat protection

    • Policy configuration and optimisation

    • Monitoring and responding to email security incidents

    • User administration and reporting


Server, Virtualisation & Unix Systems
  • Administer internal Unix/Linux environments including:

    • Proxmox virtualisation infrastructure

    • Ubuntu servers (virtual and physical)

  • Perform system patching, updates, configuration management, and monitoring

  • Troubleshoot system faults and implement corrective actions

  • Maintain system documentation and configuration records


Internal Systems & Services
  • Support and maintain internal systems including:

    • Jenkins

    • Gitea

    • OpenVPN

    • Security and authentication services

  • Ensure services are secure, available, and correctly configured

  • Support development, integration, and automation environments where required


Networking Infrastructure
  • Administer and maintain switches, routers, firewalls, and VPNs

  • Monitor network performance and reliability

  • Diagnose and resolve network and connectivity issues

  • Assist with implementation and maintenance of network security controls


End-User Computing & Hardware
  • Order, configure, deploy, and maintain laptops, desktops, and ICT hardware

  • Build systems in line with organisational standards

  • Manage device lifecycle activities including upgrades, replacements, and decommissioning

  • Provide technical support to end users, including fault diagnosis and issue resolution


Backup & Recovery
  • Administer and monitor backup and recovery systems

  • Verify backup integrity and support restoration activities

  • Ensure backup processes meet compliance and organisational requirements

IT Security & Compliance
  • Support security operations including:

    • User and system access controls

    • Privileged access management

    • Security access requests

  • Contribute to compliance with:

    • Essential Eight

    • DISP (Defence Industry Security Program)

    • Internal ICT security policies

  • Assist with audits, reviews, and security improvement initiatives

Continuous Improvement
  • Identify risks, inefficiencies, and improvement opportunities

  • Implement system, process, and security enhancements

  • Contribute to automation and standardisation initiatives

Supplier & Asset Management
  • Liaise with ICT suppliers and service providers

  • Coordinate procurement of hardware and services

  • Maintain accurate ICT asset registers

  • Ensure effective asset lifecycle management

Skills & Experience Essential:

  • Active NV1 security clearance

  • Strong experience in Microsoft 365 and cloud-based systems

  • Linux/Unix system administration experience

  • Virtualisation experience (Proxmox or similar)

  • Networking fundamentals (firewalls, VPNs, routing, switching)

  • Experience supporting secure or regulated environments

Desirable:

  • Defence industry experience

  • Familiarity with Essential Eight and DISP requirements

  • Experience with automation, CI/CD tools, or DevOps environments
