The Opportunity
Emanate Technology is partnering with a well-established national professional services organisation in Melbourne undergoing a major core platform modernisation program.
They are rebuilding their legacy operational and practice management ecosystem from the ground up into a modern, cloud-native, serverless architecture. We are looking for a hands-on Senior Backend Engineer for an initial 3-month contract to join a lean product pod and take ownership of complex backend services, asynchronous event pipelines, and third-party API integrations.
This is a pure backend engineering seat suited to someone who can hit the ground running, untangle complex integration patterns, write clean production TypeScript, and build resilient distributed systems without getting bogged down in red tape.
What You Will Be Doing
- Designing, building, and maintaining serverless backend services and APIs using Node.js and TypeScript.
- Engineering event-driven workflows, queues, and idempotent consumers to handle reliable data synchronisation across internal and external platforms.
- Building and securing integration layers between modern cloud services and legacy core systems.
- Modelling and querying NoSQL document databases to support high-availability application workflows.
- Collaborating closely within a cross-functional squad alongside a Tech Lead to ship tested, production-ready code through automated CI/CD pipelines.
- Core Stack: Strong, recent commercial experience building production backend services in modern Node.js and TypeScript(this is a pure backend role, not a frontend or UI position).
- Serverless & Cloud: Proven hands-on delivery with serverless compute and cloud infrastructure across AWS(Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, EventBridge) and/or Azure(Azure Functions, Service Bus, APIM).
- Event-Driven Architecture: Practical experience designing asynchronous messaging patterns, pub/sub workflows, and reliable retry/dead-letter handling.
- Data Layer: Solid experience working with NoSQL document stores (such as DynamoDB, Cosmos DB, or MongoDB) alongside relational databases.
- Production Ownership: Familiarity with modern CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, automated testing, and production observability tools.
- Duration: 3-month contract
- Location: Melbourne CBD (hybrid working rhythm with 2 days in the office and 3 days working from home)
- Start Date: Immediate / 2 weeks notice preferred (Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents required)
We are an inclusive employer committed to fostering a diverse and accessible workplace. We encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with disabilities, LGBTQIA+ individuals, people of all ages, and those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
