B2B SaaS Scaleup, Melbourne (Hybrid)
About the Role
If you are a Senior Backend Developer who is tired of problems that don’t push you and you want to sink your teeth into something genuinely complex, this is worth your time. We are partnering exclusively with a Melbourne based B2B SaaS scaleup that has built one of Australia’s most sophisticated field operations platforms. They coordinate hundreds of millions of dollars of work annually across complex networks of contractors, clients, and commercial sites. The product is deeply technical, genuinely mission critical, and is now hitting a massive growth inflection point as it scales into the UK and North America.
They are expanding their engineering team and are looking for a Senior Backend Developer (Python) to join a strong group of product focused engineers, with genuine scope for both technical and people leadership.
The Environment
- Backend built primarily in Python (Django ecosystem)
- Frontend written in TypeScript / React
- Infrastructure on AWS with Kubernetes (EKS) and modern CI/CD
- Thoughtful, high standards use of AI tooling across code review, automation and CI pipelines
Your core strength should be backend Python development. Experience in either frontend or platform engineering alongside this is highly valued. You do not need to be an expert in both.
What You'll Be Doing
- Own and solve hard backend problems in a large, sophisticated Python codebase, building new features and refactoring critical paths with a focus on long term maintainability.
- Translate business requirements into high quality, maintainable code, working closely with product managers and, at times, customers.
- Learn the domain deeply so you can help shape solutions, not just implement them.
- Contribute across the stack where helpful, particularly in either:
- Frontend: TypeScript / React, or
- Platform & Infrastructure: AWS, Kubernetes, CI/CD, Terraform or similar.
- Provide technical leadership through architecture discussions, design decisions, and strong engineering practices and be a go to person for tough technical calls.
- Mentor and guide other engineers, and over time take on light line management responsibilities such as regular 1:1s focused on growth and performance.
- Use and continuously improve your tooling including AI and automation, to streamline development, uplift code quality and improve the developer experience.
What We're Looking For
- 5+ years of deep Python web development experience, ideally with Django or a comparable framework used in large production systems.
- Experience in either:
- Frontend development with modern frameworks (ideally TypeScript / React), or
- Cloud / DevOps environments (AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform or similar).
- 5+ years working in product led environments such as startups or scaleups, where engineers take ownership and move quickly.
- A track record of technical leadership covering architecture, design and engineering standards, whether formal or informal.
- Strong collaboration skills and experience mentoring other engineers.
How You Work
You are someone who:
- Is comfortable in complex systems and can translate business requirements into robust, maintainable software.
- Takes ownership of problems and enjoys understanding the domain behind what you're building.
- Has deep expertise in one or two areas while remaining curious and capable across adjacent parts of the stack. A specialised generalist.
- Is proactive about improving engineering practices, tooling, and developer experience, including exploring new AI tools and automation.
The Kind of Person Who Thrives Here
Our client is particularly interested in people who:
- Love continuously learning and upskilling and keep an eye on the Python/Django and broader engineering communities.
- Balance creativity with discipline and can take a brief, following best practices to craft well thought out code at a pragmatic pace.
- Passionately solve problems and enjoy working across different parts of the business to identify and solve real customer problems.
- Are a team player, not a lone wolf. Collaborative, generous with knowledge and good to work with.
- Enjoy a vibrant, in person culture. The office is lively, dog friendly and genuinely collaborative.
