Backup & Recovery Engineer – Federal Government Agency (NV1 Required)

A major government agency is seeking an experienced Backup & Recovery Engineer to safeguard critical organisational data across on‑premises, virtual, and cloud environments. This role is responsible for ensuring the reliability, integrity, and recoverability of information assets through daily monitoring, troubleshooting, restoration activities, and scheduled disaster‑recovery exercises. The position centres on enterprise‑grade backup operations, with a strong emphasis on Commvault administration and secure data‑protection practices. When backup workloads are stable, the engineer will also contribute to broader infrastructure initiatives within the ICT operations team. An active NV1 clearance and hands‑on Commvault experience are mandatory.
Core Responsibilities
• Develop and maintain operational procedures for storage, backup, and data‑protection workflows.
• Monitor capacity, performance, and availability metrics, taking proactive action to maintain system health and prevent data‑loss risks.
• Produce reports, recommendations, and improvement proposals for storage and backup environments.
• Support the rollout of new infrastructure, upgrades, and scheduled maintenance activities.
• Establish and refine standards for disaster recovery, data retention, and protection of business‑critical applications.
• Provide expert guidance on storage and backup best practice within a secure government environment.
• Manage storage and backup platforms to meet agreed service levels, ensuring data integrity, availability, and security.
Essential Criteria
1. Demonstrated ability to manage backup, archiving, recovery, and retention processes, including identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks to meet service objectives.
2. Strong understanding of RAID configurations, tape technologies, and modern storage arrays.
3. Proven capability to diagnose and remediate storage failures, interpret logs, and apply firmware or driver updates.
4. Ability to produce clear, accurate documentation for storage operations, troubleshooting, and analysis.
5. Experience delivering and improving storage‑management services with a focus on optimal resource utilisation, data security, and system reliability.
Desirable Criteria
• 5+ years’ experience in a backup and restore engineering role.
• Certifications such as Veritas Certified Specialist or equivalent (preferred but not essential).
