We're partnering with an innovative deep technology organisation developing next-generation sensing technologies and are seeking an experienced Atomic, Molecular & Optical (AMO) Physicist to join their growing R&D team.

Working within a highly collaborative multidisciplinary team, you'll play a key role in the design, development and optimisation of advanced atomic sensing platforms, helping transform complex scientific concepts into practical, deployable technologies.
The Opportunity This is a hands-on research and development position suited to someone who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and working across the full development lifecycle.
You'll collaborate closely with physicists and engineers across multiple disciplines, driving experimental programs and contributing directly to the performance and deployment of advanced sensing systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and contribute to experimental research and development programs
- Design, build and optimise atomic and optical sensing systems
- Develop and integrate optical, electronic and mechanical subsystems
- Support the testing, validation and deployment of sensing technologies
- Contribute to sensor performance improvement, robustness and scalability
- Provide technical leadership and guidance within multidisciplinary teams
- Work closely with engineering teams to transition technologies from laboratory development to field deployment
- Utilise programming and automation tools for instrumentation, control and data analysis
- PhD in Atomic, Molecular, Quantum Physics or a closely related discipline
- Experience with laser spectroscopy, laser cooling and/or atom interferometry
- Strong understanding of atomic physics principles and experimental techniques
- Experience working with ultra-high vacuum systems
- Knowledge of narrow-linewidth laser systems and frequency stabilisation techniques
- Programming experience, ideally with Python for instrumentation, automation or data analysis
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capability
- Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced research and development environment
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Experience developing quantum sensing technologies
- Experience translating research concepts into deployable systems
- Scientific instrumentation design and integration experience
- Experience working within defence, aerospace, advanced manufacturing or deep-tech environments
- Eligibility to obtain Australian Government security clearances
